Children and Television

Television can have a powerful effect on children. Viewed as a tool, TV can have a positive influence on children. Here are the AAP recommendations for parents:

  1. Limit total media time to no more the 1-2 hours/day
  2. Remove the TV from children’s bedrooms
  3. Discourage TV viewing under 2 years and encourage interactive activities that promote proper brain development, like: reading, singing, talking, playing
  4. Monitor the shows children and teens are viewing and watch them along with them. Discuss the content.
  5. Use controversial programming to initiate discussions about family values, violence, drugs, etc.
  6. Use DVD’s, etc. wisely for educational value for children

Remember that viewing before age 3 has been associated with attentional and cognitive problems at school age. Even programs of proven educational benefit for 3-5 year old children can delay language acquisition when viewed by younger children.
